Chengdu, China

The journey from Yangshuo to Chengdu was supposed to be a 25 hour train but thankfully our guide changed our trains so that we did a 3 hour fast train ride and then a 12 hour sleeper.

The sleeper was actually surprisingly okay. By the time we settled in and watched a movie it was lights out and I slept straight through the night.

We arrived in Chengdu at 7am and had quite a long metro transfer over to the hotel. This wasn’t helped by the fact that we all felt so greasy and disgusting!

Thankfully, we were allowed 3 hours to shower and relax before a walking tour of the city. It’s so beautiful and we are surrounded by three different parks which were so nice. We then walked over to see the last statue of Mau in China which was gigantic!

The local delicacies for this region are rabbit heads and snakes.

I tried the snake but not the rabbit it was just too disgusting!

They are super big on eating out for all meals here so there is an abundance of street food everywhere and covering all areas, anyone for fresh duck?

We went to the local ‘dating market’ which is the very traditional way for parents to find husbands for their children. They do this by leaving their CV including height, weight, job and how many apartments they own on the paper and if someone is interested they can call the parents on the number! It was so surreal!

Chengdu is in the Sichuan province which is most known for its spice and their speciality is a fondue like hot pot. We asked for a mild spice and I think my mouth was bleeding by the end of it but it was a fun experience for us all!

Today we went to see the GIANT PANDAS!! This was one of the things I was most looking forward to on this trip and it didn’t disappoint! The giant pandas are endangered and they only exist in China so the research centre helps to breed them and then release them back into the wild when they’re adults.

Then in the afternoon we visited more monasteries and markets which are all so stunning!

Tomorrow it’s a 17 overnight train to Shaolin to stay in a Shaolin temple! One week travelling done thirty one to go!
